Carboxide Metal Primer is an anti corrosive zinc phosphate metal primer paint for iron and steel. It is based on alkyd resin and contains modified zinc phosphate and binding pigments. This means that long term protection is provided (see below). It is suitable as a metal primer with a variety of topcoats so is a good choice for metal gates, metal doors, architectural ironwork etc.
A choice of red, white and also grey gives you several options to match your topcoat. We have a variety of suitable topcoat paints for use with this rust inhibiting, anti corrosion primer. Take a look at our range of industrial and decorative top coats, which are found here and here.
Both iron and steel are prone to rust because they’re generally exposed to air and moisture. Rust forms when iron reacts with oxygen and water, it then creates a coating on the metal surface. When the rust is left untreated, the reaction (or oxidisation process) continues. This results in corrosion, which causes significant damage to metal (see HSE for more details).
A quality primer like Carboxide Metal Primer paint will provide longer term protection against rust and corrosion. Our customers say it works even when a surface has already begun to ‘ginger’ with rust.
What to order? Our industrial quality primer for metal has coverage of 12 – 14m² per litre and pack sizes range from 500ml right up to 20L. For help or technical advice, call us Mon to Fri 8am to 5pm. You can also use our online chat service or send us an email.
Preparation:
Proper surface preparation is essential for the success of any protective coating system. Before you begin ensure the area is free from any dust, oil, grease, old coatings and surface contaminants.
Ideal enhanced protection beneath Palatine’s selected Top Coats.
For non-ferrous metals use Palatine Fast Dry etching primer.
Rub down previously gloss painted surfaces with fine waterproof abrasive paper and rinse thoroughly.
Application:
Best results are obtained in warm (minimum 10°C), dry conditions.
Mix thoroughly for approximately 2 minutes using a drill stirrer. A wooden batten at least 25mm wide is also ideal.
Apply an even coat using a brush, short to medium pile roller on smooth surfaces and a long pile roller on textured surfaces.
For spray application by either airless or conventional spray a dilution ration of no more than 15% is recommended with Palatine White Spirit by volume.
A second coat can be applied at full strength. This will prolong the life and performance of the coating.
For application onto wooden surfaces, a minimum of two coats is recommended.
Please note: The colours on the product listings are only given as a guide. This is due to the fact that every computer monitor has a different capability to display colours. In addition, everyone sees these colours differently. Sample pots are available to order upon request. Always carry out a test patch (approximately 100x100mm) before full application
to ensure compatibility with previous coatings and the substrate, and to ensure the colour achieved meets your requirements. Failure to do so will result in a product refund claim not being accepted.

Put this on my old compressor, rubbed all the old paint off, back to metal. Thinned has recommended. This product sprayed on really well. I recommend this primer.

I applied this to a galvanised chassis and bulkhead previously passivated with mordant acid etch solution. Two coats as the geometry was really difficult. Excellent result.

Good primer, I’m not sure if it’s available in different colours – you’d need to ask, but grey seems to be the only colour advertised…
I’ll be using it again, on my houseboat as it paints on easily and evenly, and dries quite quickly. Overall, I think it’s a good product.

This primer really seems to bind well to rust. Must do a second coat. but well worth the effort
