Thermocoat WO Intumescent Basecoat
Thermocoat WO is a water-based intumescent paint system providing fire resistance to structural steel and cast iron. Apply by brush, roller or airless spray. A compatible decorative overcoat system ensures the system will enhance the building’s architectural and design features. Thermoguard Thermocoat WO is a low-odour, water-based coating, making it user and environmentally friendly. Please see below for technical and application information.
Thermocoat WO is for hollow steel posts, for I and C shaped steel and hollow bracing, see Thermocoat WI.

Thermocoat WO water based intumescent paint system provides up to 120 minutes fire resistance to structural steel and cast iron. Architectural and design features can be enhanced with a compatible overcoat system. (Range of topcoats are either water based or 2010 compliant and safe to use in line with manufacturer’s instructions).
Thermocoat WO is designed for use on hollow steel posts, for I and C shaped steel and hollow bracing, see Thermocoat WI.
How do intumescent paints work? Heat from a fire triggers a catalytic reaction and causes the insulating char layer in the coating to expand to up to 50 times the paint thickness. This layer keeps the steel below its critical temperature for longer (time specified with the coating) which maintains the structural integrity of the steel.
Thermoguard Thermocoat WO is low odour and water based, making it user and environmentally friendly. It’s also easy to apply by brush, roller or airless spray.
Please Note: If you require certification, you need to complete an enquiry form before placing the order for the product. This ensures that you apply the correct volume to achieve the required fire rating. The enquiry form is available to download from the ‘Data Sheets’ tab on this page.
Ensure steel is free from rust and millscale and primed with Thermoguard High Build Metal Primer to 75 microns DFT ( or alternative good quality anti corrosive primer compatible with intumescent paints) in line with manufacturers instructions. Treat galvanised surfaces with “T” wash/Mordant solution & prime with zinc phosphate or other primer for steel.
Apply Thermocoat WO by brush, roller or airless spray as per recommended specification. Important: please contact us to obtain a basecoat application schedule ( a wet film gauge will be supplied with the product to help comply with the spec).
* Ensure basecoat is fully dry (hard to the touch) before applying the topcoat. Note that temperature and humidity will affect drying times.

How intumescent coatings work
The heat of a fire triggers a catalytic reaction, causing the expansion of an insulating char layer up to 50 times the paint thickness. This layer keeps the steel below its critical temperature, thus maintaining the structural integrity of the building.
Fire Testing
Product performance assessment based upon UKAS/NAMAS Fire Test Laboratory Certification to BS 476 Part 21 – Fire resistance to load bearing elements of structures.
Please consult technical department 01942 871210 or email [email protected] for detailed specification advice.
Fire Certification
A Certificate of Supply is issued on request for each specified project for insurance, Fire and Building Control Authority and Client Records.
Preparation and Pre-Treatment
Steel and cast iron should be free from rust and millscale and primed with Thermoguard High Build Metal Primer to 75 microns DFT in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions. Galvanised steel should be degreased and primed with a suitable etch primer.
Thermoguard High Build Metal Primer may be left without further overcoating or decorated with appropriate conventional paint where no fire resistance is required.
Specification
Apply Thermocoat to achieve fire resistance in accordance with the instructions provided by the technical department. When steel is visible or subject to variable or damp atmospheric conditions, apply 1-2 coats (dependant on specification) of Thermoguard Flame Retardant Topcoat (available in Gloss or Eggshell finishes).
For a detailed specification, please refer to the downloadable Technical data sheet found under Product documents.
Application Conditions
Maximum Relative Humidity 80%
Minimum ambient temperature 4°C
Minimum Steel Temperature 3°C above Dew Point
Preparation
Steel and cast iron should be free from rust and millscale and primed with Thermoguard Steel Fire Paint Primer to 75 microns DFT ( or alternative good quality anti-corrosive primer compatible with intumescent paints) in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions. Treat galvanised surfaces with “T” wash/Mordant solution & prime with zinc phosphate or other primer for steel.
Application
Thermocoat WO may be applied by brush, roller or airless spray. To achieve the best finish in the shortest time, spray application is recommended. Prior to application the contractor should contact Palatine Paints to obtain a basecoat application schedule.
Maximum wet film thickness per brush coat – 800 microns
Maximum wet film thickness per spray coat – 1400 microns
Spray
Spray Equipment- Airless Spray Pump
Use equipment recommended by manufacturer for the application of high viscosity intumescent paints.
Filter size 30 mesh. 10mm hose 3/8” diameter with no whip end.
Tip Size 319, 321, 419, 421
Care should be taken to clean filters regularly. Cleaning should be undertaken with water.
Coverage
Prior to application the contractor should contact Palatine Paints to obtain a basecoat application schedule or follow on can guidance. Do not overspread as this will compromise the system and result in non-compliance and a failure to be certified
